Zimbra Desktop 7.2.7 is now available! Remember, it is a free application and is one of the best email clients to manage all of your email accounts. This release primarily addresses some important security issues and has fixed issues when syncing with Yahoo! accounts.
What’s new
- Important security issues fixed.
- Yahoo mail sync issues resolved.
- Java is no longer bundled inside the Zimbra Desktop package for Windows and Linux. Zimbra Desktop now detects and uses the Java available on the user’s machine. As part of this development, a separate 64-bit Zimbra Desktop package is available for Windows.
- Zimbra no longer ships a copy of trusted CA certificates inside the application, instead it now relies on Java’s CA trust store for improved security.
- Mac installer signing issue fixed, which was causing Zimbra Desktop to appear from an “unidentified developer”.
- Yahoo mail sync issue fixed, which was broken after Yahoo discontinued their web service mail API. IMAP/SMTP is now used for Yahoo mail sync.
- Zimbra Desktop is updated with the latest timezone data.

Hi, I’m installing the 7.2.7 with correct JAVA_HOME, PATH env variable pointing to either an OpenJDK 7 or SUN 1.8. Launching zimbra with all the variable set on the command line doesn’t give me any result; still seeing : Cannot find a JRE or JDK. Please set JAVA_HOME to a >=1.2 JRE
Any idea ? what is ZD really looking for ?
Hi Erol,
What Operating System are you using? Let us know.
Best regards
I have the same problem as Erol. I have been using Zimbra Desktop for a few years now and love it but whatever this problem is needs attention.
I have installed and re-installed Java SE and still can’t get Desktop to update.
I am running Windows 7 on 64bit platform.
Is there a fix for this problem?
JD
Hi JD,
What problem are you facing? Did you try to install Java 64 bits then? From this link http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html
Let us know.
Best regards
Yes, I have tried loading the 64bit version from that website.
The problem is when updating Zimbra it come up with the error that my Java SE version is not found or is out of date.
I have the latest version of Java SE on my system, I have tried uninstalling and installing a number of time both the 32bit older version and the 64bit newer version same error.
JD
What do you have if you run the next command in a Terminal?
java -version
Look, this is what I have, and it is working:
Jorges-MacBook-Pro:$ java -version
java version “1.8.0_25”
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_25-b17)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.25-b02, mixed mode)
Let us know
Here is what I get:
java version “1.8.0_60”
java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_60-b27)
java Hotspot(TM) 64-bit Server VM (build 25.60-b23, mixed mode)
Hi JD,
The only thing I can think about, it’s that maybe the JAVA_HOME is not set properly, for I don’t understand what reason.
Try the next steps – https://kaanmutlu.wordpress.com/2013/04/26/setting-the-java_home-in-windows-7-64-bit/
Best regards
Hi, Jorge
Followed the instructions on the website got the variable and path set restarted windows tried to update Zimbra got the same error, Java not installed or out of date.
JD
For months now I have been trying to upgrade my Zimbra install and have not been able to get pass the java error. I have tried updating, reinstalling, total remove of both java and zimbra and still can’t get by the java error.
Is there a real solution to this problem?
Tired of trying to upgrade, will abandoned Zimbra if solution not found.
Thanks for any help
Zdesktop rocks!! So excited that it is getting some attention again.
Just one question , when are we going to see 64bit for linux ?
I am unable to upgrade to 7.2.7 , on Fedora 22, it says it needs 32bit libs. I have installed all of them and more , still no joy.
So currently sticking to 7.2.5.
Hi Deon,
Did you try to follow the steps from this Tech Center Article, special the 6 one about Java, http://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Installing_Zimbra_Desktop_7_on_Ubuntu_Desktop_64bits Let us know.
Zimbra Desktop 7.3 will not be based on Prism and we will see a proper 64bits for Linux Distros, but this will take some time.
Best regards
No most important feature like filter.
very nice article and thank you for all your help !
Zimbra Server won’t run on 32 bit, but Zimbra Desktop requires it? The referenced Tech Center Article
http://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Installing_Zimbra_Desktop_7_on_Ubuntu_Desktop_64bits
Requires that you configure your system for 32 bit Java using “sudo update-alternatives –config java”. So in order to run Zimbra Desktop I have to reconfigure my entire system to default to 32 bit Java? That’s just not an option for many people, especially software developers.
BTW, 7.2.5 works just fine. I don’t really understand why the requirements changed. If they did not, then the Linux installation (at least on Ubuntu) has a serious bug.
Hi rabinnh,
Zimbra Desktop 7.3.0 will work for Linux 64 bits without any issue. So until then, if you have something you can break using Java 32bit, I recommend you keep in 7.2.5.
Best regards
Hi, what is the plan with zdesktop now that Windows 10 is out. Does 7.2.7 run on Windows 10? I gather win 10 has a mail app, is this the end of zdesktop?
Hi Peter Wolfe,
Zimbra Desktop 7.2.7 works properly in Windows 10, we are doing some QA to add it into our Official Documentation but it is working for me. You only need Java JDK 64 bits – http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html
You can also see here a Screenshot in Windows 10 and Zimbra Desktop running – https://bugzilla.zimbra.com/show_bug.cgi?id=100632
Zimbra Desktop works with Open Source Zimbra editions, and Windows Native Mail App requires a Network Edition license and Activesync accounts, also Zimbra Desktop works in Linux or OSX, and Windows Native Mail App doesn’t :) Zimbra Desktop also allows you sync your Briefcase, and much other stuff.
Zimbra Desktop is more alive than ever, the Team is working on the upcoming Zimbra Desktop 7.3.0, and also in the new Zimbra Desktop 8 (future). So you have a lot of options to choose, my personal choose is still Zimbra Desktop.
Best regards
Great, thanks Jorge!
I have OS X 10.10 and JRE 1.8 but can’t get Zimbra desktop to install because it fails the java version test looking for 1.6 or greater. The verify from java site confirms I have the latest versions.
Hi Paul,
Did you try with the latest JDK, instead JRE? http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html
Try that one, and maybe like the last chance try this one, but not necessary with the lates Zimbra Desktop – https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572?locale=en_GB
Best regards
My client (human) runs OSX 10.9 and gets java errors after installing ZD 7.2.7 and trying to add a Zimbra email account. (Server was updated to latest Zimbra server in late July.) She’s uninstalled and reinstalled ZD and tried Apple support.
1) Does ZD 7.2.7 really work on OSX 10.9? I don’t want to waste time if it doesn’t really work. Apple Store support tried to install ZD 7.2.7 on the store server version of OSX 10.9 and got the same error when adding an email account in ZD. Unclear which Java version they were running.
2) Which version of Java should be running on OSX? The latest or an older one?
3) Does ZD need to be installed as same user as main java? If so, how does one ensure that?
I posted a ticket here: http://community.zimbra.com/desktop/f/1933/p/1139986/1587108#1587108
Thank you.
Hi Rafael,
I’ve tried in 10.9 and worked. Can you try to install the next Java version, for Mac:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html
With that should be enough, in case still failing, try as well the next OS update – https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572?locale=en_GB
Let us know.
Best regards
Thanks, Jorge. Will try on Monday. Really appreciate it.
Jorge, this is belated thanks for your quick response on Aug 21. I installed latest Java version on Mac OSX 10.9 and Zimbra Desktop 7.2.7 works! (I did not need to try the OS update.) Thank you!
Hi Rafael,
I’m so glad that it worked!
Thank you for your feedback.
Hi,
I’ve got the same problem as Erol and JD. I wanted to use Zimbra for the first time, so I downloaded it and I got the same error as JD: my Java SE version is not found or is out of date. I also followed the steps you proposed, but the problem is still there!
I’m using Windows 10, 64 bits.
I see there is still no solution for it? It’s a pitty… I wanted to give Zimbra a chance as my new email client, but I’ll have to look for another client… Am I right?
Thanks for your answer!
Sofie
Hi Sofie,
I’ve just tested in my Windows 10 64bits and everything is working properly, I’ve used a Windows 10 fresh install, then I’ve installed:
Java – Windows 64 options from here – http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html
Zimbra Desktop 7.2.7 64 bits from here – https://files.zimbra.com/downloads/zdesktop/7.2.7/b12059/zdesktop_7_2_7_ga_b12059_20150629060421_win64.msi
Here a screenshot with everything working – https://www.dropbox.com/s/vr3o8t8ji6u1b5n/Windows%2010%20×64%202015-09-20%2000-14-13.png?dl=1
Best regards
tried with the standard JRE (https://www.java.com/en/download/) and got the java missing error everyone is reporting.
then i tried with the full software development kit (SDK) you mentioned here and the installer finds the JRE (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html)
so it looks like a build for the SDK fails to find a normal JRE install
HI Guys,
Still here and have not been able to get Zimbra Desktop 32 bit or 64 bit running, still looking for some answers. Anyone have any fresh answers, I would really like to get this resolved?
Thanks for your help,
JD
Hi,
I am using Zimbra Desktop 7.2.7 GA (build 12059) on my 2014 MacBook Pro. Everything has worked find almost 2 years. Last week I upgrade the software on the MacBrook Pro to OS X Capitan and now my Zimbra Desktop email is not working? I have installed Java 1.6 thinking that would help but it didn’t? Anyone else running into this issue after upgrading? Is there a solution? Than, you very much.
Hi Brad,
Did you try with the Java version here? http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html
Install it and let us know.
Best regards
yes sir, that is what is on my machine?
Hi Brad,
Let me upgrade my OS X as well to El Capitan and I will let you know.
Do you have any kind of error?
Best regards
Thank you so much. For some reason I think I need to uninstall the version of Java you have referenced and reinstall another version…JavaFor OS X.pkg?
Here is my error from my Zimbra Desktop mail program:

Umh, but did the Zimbra Desktop open at all? And then when open you receive that error right? Because the error is a 404 error in the Server you are trying to connect.
I start thinking that you might want to contact as well with your provider? Just double check before I do the upgrade, I have million of other apps up and running now, so might be later when I will have some spare time.
Best regards
Jorge, thanks so much for your help, sir.
Jorge,
Zambia desktop opens but then I get a red circle with a white x creating the error that I can’t connect to the server? When you say provider who do you mean? At&t? My mac email on the same machine works outside of Zimbra Desktop, all my families .mac mail works just fine too. My zimbra desktop mail is the only thing not working since i upagred to os x capitan?
Sorry that I do not understand what to do from here?
Good Morning,
is anyone else having trouble with Zimbra Desktop 7.2.7 running Mac OS X Captian? Still trying to figure out how to solve for this one? Thank you.
I saw the next Community Thread – https://community.zimbra.com/desktop/f/1899/t/1140427
But I was not able to install yet El Capitan, we can continue there, in the Community Thread.
Best regards
Hi,
Same problem with OS X El Capitan upgrade (using Zimbra Desktop 7.2.7 build 12059 / Java 8u60). Fixed with Java SE Development Kit 8u60 installation.
Hi Jorge,
Zimbra Desktop 7.2.7 working well on my Mac (OSX 10.11.1). But I need your help in integrating my zimbra mail into outlook 2016 (mac) / applemail whatever easiest. I searched several sites and tried all the possible shots, but nothing worked.
Hi Vamsy,
Are you using Zimbra Collaboration Network Edition or Open Source Edition, and which version?
Best regards
I am having a simular issue.
I have attempted to install Zimbra DeskTop on my LinuxMint 17.3 .64 serveral times, with no luck.
Each time it installs nicely but in the final step the Zimbra Desktop dialog window appears to be opening but only spins with final results of either to continue to debug or cancel. Now the Zimbra Desktop is greyed out on my desktop with a small lock in the right upper corner of the icon?
Please advise.
Hello, could you please write the same question, copy/paste, on the same Forum – https://forums.zimbra.org/viewforum.php?f=25&sid=d32ff61db9d7f62a613c0e92c7304fc2 So our Engineers can help you there much better than in a Blog comments.
Thank you!
I have successfully started the zdesktop 7.2.7 on kubuntu 16.04
Hacing experimented with several java packages, the following one worked fine
# apt-get install openjdk-8-jdk:i386
root@dyn:~# update-alternatives –config java
There are 4 choices for the alternative java (providing /usr/bin/java).
Selection Path Priority Status
————————————————————
0 /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/bin/java 1083 auto mode
1 /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/bin/java 1083 manual mode
2 /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java 1081 manual mode
* 3 /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-i386/jre/bin/java 1080 manual mode
4 /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-oracle/jre/bin/java 1082 manual mode
Press to keep the current choice[*], or type selection number: 3
Hope that helps.
I can’t find anywhere to run filters on existing emails. All of the documentation online mentions an option to click “run” to run filters on existing emails, but this option doesn’t seem to exist. Has it been moved in this release, or is this a bug? Please help, I have a huge backlog of emails to filter.
Shayne,
“Run filter” feature is not available in ZD. Here is a bug https://bugzilla.zimbra.com/show_bug.cgi?id=53566.
Thanks Pritesh. I can’t believe this bug has been in place for nearly 5 years. Doesn’t look good.
