The Leader…Looking back at Zimbra in 2007

2007 was the best year for Zimbra yet. We thought we would take a moment to recap the great things that happened this year. Here are the events that were big milestones for us.


Zimbra releases Zimbra Collaboration Suite 4.5 (Jan 16, 2007)[link]:

Marking a major release for us, ZCS 4.5 was released on January 16, 2007. It had over 90 new features as well as over 1,000 bug fixes. Some of the notable features introduced in 4.5 were: Mail Identities, Personal Distribution Lists, Zimlet Management via Admin Console, and the new Basic HTML client (later called the Standard Client).

Zimbra Desktop is Launched (Mar 26, 2007)[link]:

Utilizing cutting edge technology, Zimbra brought Web 2.0 Collaboration offline with the Launch of Zimbra Desktop. Zimbra Desktop allows users of Zimbra to get their Zimbra experience without always being connected.

Zimbra and Comcast team up to offer the first elegant, unified communications app for consumers (May 6, 2007)[link]:

For Zimbra, this is important on many levels. Many consumers have seen the Zimbra demo and asked us how they could get their own personal Zimbra mailbox. This gives consumers access to the Zimbra innovations and we are really excited about that. We are really proud that we earned our stripes by proving server scale.

Zimbra becomes an inaugural member of the Red Hat Exchange (May 10, 2007)[link]:

We were are part of the RHX launch in May. This was exciting for us because it expanded Zimbra’s reach into the enterprise market.

Zimbra releases j2me client for Mobile Devices (Aug 26, 2006)[link]:

Getting your Mail, Calendars, and Contacts anywhere and at anytime is important for you. That’s why we introduced a j2me client for mobile devices.

Zimbra becomes part of Yahoo! (Sept 17, 2007)[link]:

Marking the largest milestone in Zimbra’s history ever, Zimbra was purchased by Yahoo for 350 million. The goal of the acquisition is to bring Zimbra’s industry changing technology to the market as a true power player.

Zimbra Forums grow 6,000 members to over 12,000 (Dec 2007)[link]:

100% growth in 1 year isn’t bad. It took us 3 years to get 6,000 members, and now we’re at 12,000.

Zimbra releases Zimbra Collaboration Suite 5.0 (Dec 31, 2007)[link]:

The most feature packed release ever was released at the end of 2007. Zimbra 5.0 introduced the briefcase, Lazy Loading, Tasks, and a ton of bug fixes.

Zimbra grows from 5 Million paid mailboxes at the end of 2006 to 10 Million at the end of 2007.

To sum it up, Zimbra continues to grow as people realize the potential of a versatile platform with little "overhead" on an Open platform. Thanks for you, Zimbra will continue to fill the void that other providers leave.
