Zimbra Collaboration NG (New Generation) Modules
Zimbra includes four NG modules:
- Backup
- Mobile
- HSM
- Delegated Admin
The NG modules are all new and provide significant enhancements and new features to Zimbra users and customers. A comparison between Zimbra version 8.8 and 8.7 or earlier is included for each module, so you can easily compare versions.
Backup
One of the standout features in the Zimbra Collaboration 8.8 Network Edition is the new Backup module. The new Backup module offers a real-time backup of every transaction performed at the mailbox level, so in addition to backing up each email, Zimbra now backs up calendar appointments, tags, preferences and so on.
Another great new feature of the Backup module is the option to recover backups in a completely different environment of Zimbra or even a different operating system. Now, for example, you can perform a Zimbra backup on Ubuntu 16.04 and restore it on Red Hat Enterprise 7.

Mobile / ActiveSync
Zimbra Collaboration 8.8 also includes important updates for ActiveSync:
- Device compatibility has improved.
- Information presented to the Administrator has been improved.
- All connected devices have been grouped in a single view in the Admin Console.
- Dedicated logging is now available for all ActiveSync activities.
However, the greatest novelty of this new version is the ability to synchronize all your shared items in Zimbra! Customers have been requesting this functionality for years, and it’s here.

HSM
The new HSM module includes some highly anticipated news. You can now move data automatically to S3-compatible storage such as Amazon S3. For example, you can set a default policy to move messages 30 days or older to Amazon S3. You can also create multiple HSM policies to move other data as needed.
Another feature of Zimbra 8.8’s HSM module is the ability to migrate elements from one volume to another without any problems, such as moving elements when a volume is close to being filled.

Delegated Admin
The new Delegated Admin module in Zimbra Collaboration 8.8 provides more granular control of delegated administration and greatly simplifies the task of creating new delegated admins. There is also new activity logging of delegated admin operations and a monthly report of all activities performed by delegated admins.

Zimbra Chat
Zimbra Chat is the new peer-to-peer chat available in all versions of Zimbra Collaboration 8.8 – at no additional cost. Zimbra will provide Technical Support and solve bugs on this product.
Zimbra Drive
Zimbra Drive is another end user feature included in all versions of Zimbra Collaboration 8.8 – at no additional charge. Zimbra Drive provides enterprise-level file storage and synchronization.
Zimbra Drive is based on a Zimlet and a server extension that automatically connect and authenticate with ownCloud or Nextcloud. Your users can make use of all the features these products offer, including syncing files from mobile and desktop apps.

Hi,
can you use OpenStack Swift instead of Amazon S3?
Thanks,

Hello Tomas S,
Let me get back to you with a proper answer to it. Best regards.
does 8.8 GA include the new UI?
Thank you for asking about Zimbra’s Universal UI project. The Universal UI beta phase is now completing–we got great input during that process. Please look for an update from us about Universal UI in January 2018. Thank you!
So I can backup and restore accounts between two Zimbra servers running difference version of Zimbra? Must both be at least version 8.8 or one of them will do?
Hello Wong Boon,
If you are a Network Edition Customer, you can use now the Backup NG, and use a backup from older Zimbra versions using ZSP trial. You can find more information about this here – https://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Zimbra_Releases/8.8 and here https://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Zimbra_NG_Modules/Zimbra_NG_Backup/zxbackup-migration You can also open a Support Ticket to clarify the procedure before starting it, and try it in a staging environment as well. Thank you Wong Boon
Congratulations Jorge – to you all at Zimbra and the wider team. I know how hard you have worked on this release. 2018 is going to be a great year!
Hi Jorge, good job.
I am wondering if zimbra community backup / replication options are the same or if we have more options to make a backup with zimbra tools without stopping services.
Until now as far as I know, people using zimbra community uses volume snapshots, to make hot backups, or rsync like tools to sync in two phases.
But all the great options for backup are only for the network version…
Hello Manuel,
Thank you for your comment! At the moment the best option for Community users is to take a look at Zimbra Suite Plus, which includes Backup Plus, or if you are worried about Backup just buy Backup Plus and OSe Support. Here you might find more information about prices – https://shop.zimbra.com/
Any other unsupported script you might find on forums or GitHub, they will keep working as usual, but as you know they are not supported.
Thank you for letting us know your feedback!
Heloo,
The Zimbra NG modules (Backup, Mobile, HSM, Delegated Admin) are only for the Zimbra Collaboration 8.8 Network Edition?
Can you please specify to me, what’s news between Zimbra 7.2 and Zimbra 8.8?
Thank you
Hello – yes, the foundation code for the NG modules was introduced in Zimbra 8.8, which is why they NG modules do not work with earlier versions of Zimbra. Thanks!
