Zimbra Acquires Mezeo: Adds Cloud-Based Secure File Sharing Capabilities

I have a very keen feeling of déjà vu. It’s hard to believe that we were communicating the acquisition and planned merger of Zimbra and Telligent on this exact day last year. And today, I have the pleasure of announcing that Zimbra has acquired Mezeo, a software company that provides secure file sync and share and cloud storage for service providers, governments and companies worldwide.

Why is this news so exciting? Secure file sync and share is critical for today’s users, and it is one of the capabilities Zimbra customers request most often. By acquiring Mezeo, it allows us to expand our product offering to now include user-friendly file sync and share, while also enabling complete control over data. We also gain standout technical talent and IP (including patents that cover aspects of storage efficiency and file security). Overall, this acquisition adds tremendous value to our network of more than 1,000 partners, 500+ service providers, and 200,000+ organizations using our platform.

Why did we acquire Mezeo? Zimbra acquired Mezeo for its secure file sync and share and cloud storage technology, ability to support the deployment demands of service providers, and talented employees who understand the unique needs of service providers. We see tremendous value in bringing secure file sync and share and effective cloud storage to our collaboration offering, especially a solution like Mezeo that complements our mobile-first approach and aligns with our commitment to secure, private collaboration

How will Mezeo impact Zimbra’s solutions? The acquisition of Mezeo will help to further enhance Zimbra’s strategy and solutions in four key areas:

  • Security – Designed with data protection and security in mind, Mezeo incorporates strong encryption technology and can be deployed to meet unique data privacy and compliance requirements.
  • Privacy – Mezeo offers a cloud storage solution that deploys in your data center, ensures data integrity, and integrates with your support services to simplify service delivery.
  • User experience – Mezeo delivers a user-friendly experience while still maintaining complete control over data governance and compliance.
  • Customer focus – Unlike consumer cloud services, Mezeo’s architecture is designed for service provider scale, making it possible for service providers to white label and launch new services around cloud storage.

I hope all of you are just as excited as we are about what this acquisition means. Stay tuned to the Zimbra Blog for further details.

    Hi team,
This is an incredible news, I’ve waited for a new Briefcase for years :) Excelent news, even in summer-time.

Does this mean Zimbra finally gets a desktop file sync application?

    • Patrick Brandt July 17, 2014 at 8:16 AM #

Yes, we now have secure file sharing & syncing accessible by desktop or mobile devices. It will take a short time to get integrated, but not long. Stay tuned.

  3. Mike Hammett July 15, 2014 at 2:41 PM #

Will the new systems be integrated into your existing products or will they remain separate?

    • Patrick Brandt July 17, 2014 at 8:07 AM #

Mike, the new product will integrated and remain available as a standalone application. Thank you for your post.

Congratulations Patrick Brandt and the team at Zimbra on the acquisition of Mezeo. This further demonstrates Zimbra’s commitment to providing a secure and private solution for their clients, and it is for this reason MailGuard are proud Zimbra partners.

Well it sounds nice to get the Zimbra Universe competeable again with the BigGuys.

However ISPs not only need functionality. We need a better licencing Model.

By licensing as it is the possible Zimbra customer base is very thin, can only be sold in business and still has to compete with very cheap google and microsoft services (they are cheaper than license costs of zimbra).
If this is similar with the new Product well then iam afraid the userbase will stay relativly small.

I mean think about, we have to pay at least 3-4$ a months only for Zimbra licenses, and now extra for filesharing.
Not included our costs for diskspace, servers, support, bandwith, power and so on.

On the other hand a customer get for 5$ a 50Gb storage at google, including filesharing, email, docs and everything on every plattform.

also we finally need all zimbra services on the mobile platform – here is the corrent war – this field is to win.

    • Patrick Brandt July 17, 2014 at 8:03 AM #

Thank you for your perspective. We would appreciate a conversation, as we strive to provide the best value to our customers & partners — and are certainly more competitive in both actual costs and total cost of ownership.

    • Steve Poncini July 17, 2014 at 9:03 AM #

Thanks ver much for comments and concern. I am the SVP of Worldwide Channels at Zimbra, which includes looking after our program and pricing models for Business Service Providers.

I would be keen to have a conversation and bring you up to speed on some of the exciting changes we have made over the last year since leaving VMware. Many of these changes have been made to directly address the areas where you expressed concern and they have allowed our partners to offer a more competitive Zimbra offering.

Please contact me directly on sponcini@zimbra.com or on +1.415.702.5578 and I look forward to sharing more about how Zimbra can help.

How soon can we get start.

    • Patrick Brandt July 17, 2014 at 8:06 AM #

Soon. Soon. I will have one of our team members reach out to you directly.

Very exciting guys, having worked closely with Mezeo on a mobile first cloud solution I know it is going to add huge value to your business.

    This is great news!

Any news if the application will support Linux or the OSS edition of Zimbra?

Linux Desktop support would be an all or nothing for us as we are a Linux (CentOS) only shop.

    • Rob Howard
      Rob Howard July 27, 2014 at 8:19 AM #

      Hi Jake,

Yes, the Mezeo product does support Linux (server side) and there is no reason why you couldn’t run it with the OSS edition of Zimbra.

However, there is not a Linux sync client right now (only Windows/Mac and iOS/Android). This is something we recognize that needs to be done and is on our roadmap.

We plan to make it available as both as standalone and an integrated offering, but we’ll have more details to share in the coming weeks / months.

  11. Jeshurun July 29, 2014 at 11:32 PM #

If this is to be integrated, will it also make it to the open source edition, or will it strictly remain a NE only feature?

      Matthew Lewis August 6, 2014 at 6:54 AM #

Hello Jeshurun, does the comment directly above this not adequately answer your question? If not, I will work to get you a better answer.

  12. john strumm August 7, 2014 at 3:03 PM #

The next big thing I am hoping for from Zimbra is that they incorporate into Zimbra Mobile suite is viewing/ editing documents. the current offer doesn’t offer it with any degree of security. looking forward to that hopefully one day soon.

Hello John and thanks for the comment. We are excited about this acquisition, because of the secure, mobile, file-sharing capabilities it brings to the portfolio. In addition, it provides us a very important, secure, document-sharing platform, upon which to build thumbnail previews, full viewing and then editing.

The mobile workforce is a key focus area for us. The team is working diligently to ensure coming product updates expand capabilities, while constantly improving user experience and security. Stay tuned for some cool product updates and releases.

  13. Vinzenz August 20, 2014 at 4:39 AM #

@Matthew Lewis: I think what Jeshurun wants to know is, will Mezeo be integrated into Zimbra OSS and therefore be available as (free) OSS version itself? Currently it looks like Mezeo is only available as a paid version.

    • Matthew Lewis
      Matthew Lewis August 20, 2014 at 8:12 AM #

At this time, Zimbra is exploring all options. Currently the product is only available as a commercial product. The product roadmap will be determined in the coming months. However, stay tuned for some news on one of the other products.

      Thanks Vinzenz for the assist.

    hmm, you claim “security” …

Can we have the source code for review and build everything on our own ?

  15. Indar October 5, 2014 at 5:55 AM #

When will the File-Sync and Share can be used, we presently having ZCS network edition running onsite , as we maintain the the datacenter by ourselves, We are very much awaiting for such functionality, I was even asked to switch to novelvibe and groupwise but with this File-Sync and Share we get the similar benefits (like novel vibe and groupwise)

    do update us

    Thanks and regards

      Matthew Lewis October 7, 2014 at 1:06 PM #

Hello Indar, thank you for the question. I will follow up with a direct message.

      Talk soon

  16. Iqbal November 10, 2014 at 7:11 PM #

is it available on ZCS version 8.5?

    • Rob Howard
      Rob Howard November 11, 2014 at 9:10 AM #

It is available, but not integrated. In version 8.6 of Zimbra Collaboration we will have basic integration between Zimbra Sync and Share and Zimbra Collaboration. We are planning more extensive integration between the products in a future release.

  17. Todd Lockhart January 8, 2015 at 11:13 AM #

Having just upgraded to ZCS NE 8.6, I’m curious about the integration with Sync and Share but can’t find any explicit documentation in the ZCS resources (and nothing at all for Sync and Share itself). Is there anything that covers the integration points?

Also, I’d be particularly interested if Sync and Share could be used to mirror local file server shares (currently Windows 2012R2).

    Matthew Lewis January 16, 2015 at 9:49 AM #

Thank you Todd for reaching out to us. The newest release of Zimbra Sync and Share, version 2.0, is currently in private beta. Version 2.0 does include integration with Zimbra Collaboration. The documentation will be available with the GA release of Zimbra Sync and Share 2.0, which we anticipate being late spring/early summer 2015. Thank you!

  19. Störm Poorun January 31, 2015 at 8:56 AM #

    Rob/Matthew, thanks for the updates.

How will Sync and Share interact with

    1) Briefcase – will Briefcase continue, and will Sync and Share replace Briefcase as a built-in app tab in Zimbra Collaboration for Sync and Share users, or will it be a separate system?

    2) Zimbra Collaboration tags – will they share a common tagging system? Important for those of us that utilise tags rather than files for semantic workflow/organisation.

    • Matthew Lewis
      Matthew Lewis February 2, 2015 at 2:42 PM #

Thank you for your questions. We are currently undergoing a private beta for version 2.0 of the software. This version does not integrate with Zimbra Collaboration for tagging; however, we have identified this capability for a future release. Version 2.0 of Zimbra Sync and Share will not replace briefcase. Our plan is to make Zimbra Sync and Share an option that can be added if additional functionality, like file syncing for example, is desired.
