Telligent Acquires Zimbra from VMware

I’m pleased to say that Telligent, a market leader in enterprise social software, today announced that it has acquired from VMware the global assets of Zimbra. Telligent and Zimbra will merge under the Zimbra brand to form an enterprise software company offering a unified social collaboration suite built for the post-PC era.

Why the combination? Zimbra and Telligent solutions are both designed for collaboration and have complementary capabilities. Telligent offers enterprise social collaboration including real-time communication, social networking, instant messaging and online communities. Paired with Zimbra for enterprise-class email, calendar and collaboration, the combined offering will cover the entire collaboration spectrum.

Under the Zimbra brand, Zimbra software will continue to be made available on premise and in the cloud through the company and its partners. The combined company will also maintain its worldwide presence, with offices in Dallas, Palo Alto, Tokyo, London and Pune, India. Zimbra will be led by an integrated management team under the leadership of Patrick Brandt, CEO of Telligent. Zimbra will receive investments from VMware along with other investors, and VMware will be a strategic partner of the new Zimbra, helping to ensure long-term continuity for customers and partners.

“Our goal is to return Zimbra to its roots as an independent collaboration software leader with a vibrant open source community,” says Patrick Brandt, CEO of Telligent. “This merger is a reflection of how people collaborate today – it’s about innovation in social, mobile and cloud technology. We are committed to delivering innovative products to our customers and partners, and we are committed to being open.”

The acquisition is not expected to impact the next major release of Zimbra (JudasPriest), scheduled for early next year. In fact, new social capabilities for Zimbra, along with already-planned projects such as the HTML5 Offline Web App, HTML5 Touch Web App, Exchange Web Services and “Always ON” Carrier Grade Architecture, will be on display at the combined company’s user group conference, The Big Social, September 23-25, 2013 in Dallas, TX. More information about the user group conference, including Zimbra sessions and speakers, will be communicated in the coming weeks.

This is an interesting development. We’re a long-time Zimbra customer and I’m excited at the opportunity to attend a Zimbra conference – it’ll be a great chance to share what sites are doing with Zimlets. Looking forward to great new advances from Zimbra/Telligent

Can we be assured that there is an ongoing commitment to make available an open source edition of Zimbra Calaboration Suite?

Great to see a renewed commitment to the open source community. I’m a VMware fan but it was clear pretty early on that it wasn’t a good fit for Zimbra. I’m hopeful for a return to a more open development process.

I keep hearing about the Post-PC era – but in my industry (Government) we are still heavily PC dependent (and plan to be for a long time). I’m hoping that Telligent sees fit to keep improving the product on the PC as well as mobile devices.

Glad to hear and hoping to go further with Telligent. Much better medium to move forward. Congratulations to all.

    Telligent who?

  8. Rax July 15, 2013 at 11:03 PM #

We have used Zimbra as a colo in our office Infrastructure in Pune and I know it is one of the great solutions.

Would like to see more collaborative features and also lighter web version for ease of use and navigation.

    Cheers to the Team!!!

As a Zimbra User, I for one am a little tired of being tossed from company to company.

Hopefully this product will find a good permanent home with someone that will stay committed to the open source community. It seems like each time it gets sold off the commitment gets watered down.

Zimbra was not good fit for VMWare anyways, I have never used/heard of Telligent in the past but from what it sounds like, the product seems to fit into their product line a little better anyways.

Lets just hope that Patrick Brandt’s comments to return to Zimbra to its roots will follow their actions.

Yes. There is no plan to change the open source commitment and it is one of the many reasons the new leadership team is excited about the combination.

Thanks for the reply and that is good to hear. I think it would have helped to have had that in the original announcement, because I read a few articles, where a questionmark was put over this because it was not specifically mentioned.

If you google “zimbra telligent open source edition” you will find a few blogs along those lines. Phrases like “up in the air”, etc.

Anyway, thanks again for clarifying and good-luck with your new endevour!

It’s a good news joint venture is always good with growing company and Zimbra one of them.

Here i have only suggestion if you guys will work on SSO with zimbra as this feature is required in India on high frequency. I have configured near about 30 Zimbra servers and dig deeply to get the SSO login but no success.

    Big FAN of open source…

Congratulations for continuing the project zimbra.
It would be interesting beyond the design you guys redeem the sale of licenses.
Always use the network version, but after that VMware bought zimbra
we were forced to use the opensource version.

As an MSP, we recommend Zimbra to many of our customers.

It is by far the best alternative to Microsoft Exchange out there.

For some client, IMAP mail from a standard ISP or Hosted Mail Provider is ok. Anything beyond the basics needs either Exchange or Zimbra. The shared calendaring, shared address books, device synch are key.

I hope you realize that there is absolutely nothing out there that even compares to Exchange as a competitor now that Lotus Notes/Domino is biting the dust, so please keep up the good work with Zimbra.

VMware + Ubuntu + Zimbra offers a significantly cheaper alternative to email, groupware and collaboration for SME/SMB companies.

Very delighted to see the new logo and mission statement. Great job on completing the merge today. Keen to see the new social-inclu and rich collaborative release of Zimbra. Best of luck.

I’ve used Zimbra for a few years now, and it is a fantastic product. There’s nothing else on the market providing such an amazing feature set in an open source solution.

I hope it’s finally found a permanent home with Telligent :)

I am a director of GLMZ and we offer collaboration solutions to our customers.

WHAT does it require to become a distributor / business partner offering your solutions to customers in East Africa.

This is the first I’ve heard of this! I wonder how this all plays into using Zimbra under the VMWare Partner Program. ;-)

I am quite sick of fight with linux, this was cool when I was in high school and uni, now I have no time for a lunch and I have to fight with linux and constant changes in the system. Could you please sit it on Windows and make it human friendly or make it “one install and maintenance” click required. I use the system for years and I am slowly getting over it. Windows if it is good or bad is having one thing over all linux goodies, I do not need to spend hours on keeping it going. Thnx for consideration.
