Introducing Zimbra Community 8.0: New Release & Free Edition Enhance Support & Increase Employee Productivity

Today, we just released the latest version of our community software solution: Zimbra Community 8.0.

First, before I give you the highlights of our new release, I would like to clarify any confusion around the product name. Last year in July, Telligent and Zimbra merged to form one, unified organization. As a result of that merger, the name of our community software solution changed. Previously named Telligent Community and Telligent Enterprise, our community offering is now known as Zimbra Community. Zimbra Community will continue to be laser-focused on enhancing customer support and increasing employee productivity for organizations of all sizes.

Now that you have a solid understanding of our product name’s background, I’d like to share some of the highlights from this release, starting with the fact that Zimbra Community 8.0 is offered in several editions (free, standard and professional) designed to suit any user’s desired experience. Plus, we’ve also totally rebuilt our trial experience.

  • Zimbra used to be an email platform. Looking at this product sheet, I honestly can not tell if this still an email platform.

    I mean the social things that are tacked onto the zimbra email server components are neat… but aren’t they on top of the email server components like the mta, ldap and such? Why doesn’t the product sheet mention anything about this being an email server anymore?

    This release is for Zimbra COMMUNITY, the next release of Zimbra COLLABORATION (email) is coming this summer. We haven’t synced up our version numbers on the 2 products at this point.

    Sorry for any confusion. This product announcement is for Zimbra Community 8.0 which is a online social community platform. Last year, telligent (makers of telligent Community) bought Zimbra and took on the Zimbra name. Right now there are 2 products, Zimbra Collaboration (email) and Zimbra Community (online social community). Don’t worry the email platform is still VERY alive and well. Watch for news about the next release of Zimbra Collaboration this summer. In the meantime give the community platform a try. :)

  • I think your product naming – having Zimbra collaboration and Zimbra community is confusing. The ‘old’ zimbra product did both and I strongly suspect that your sales/marketing teams will spend an undue amount to time diffusing the mess.

  • @Scott_K, yes it’s true, Zimbra Community runs on windows servers. We understand that’s not everyone’s choice for server platforms, but if it’s an option I think you’ll find that our social community platform is extremely powerful, flexible, and extensible. If you’d like to learn a little more, and are open to the possibility of a Windows server based solution let us know….also if you prefer we can put you in our SaaS offering so you wouldn’t need to taint your datacenter with windows. :)

    We understand that there may be some confusion on the product name. We are working hard to clarify, mostly because Zimbra Community 8.0 that was released today is social community platform with a feature set you will not find in the Zimbra Collaboration product. Indeed as we work to build a supremely integrated set of functionality to power the future of b2b and b2c and internal communication the distinctions will continue to change.

  • Windows is not open-source. This makes it very tough and a huge curve for many nonprofits that use Linux because of cost and cost of service and learning curve. Also, when you say Zimbra Community is open-source, what license is this flying under? It may be best to package it with Windows as an appliance so that people can fire it up in a hypervisor/virtual machine.

  • @Bruce – Zimbra Collaboration is where our open source heritage lies. You can see the license here http://www.zimbra.com/license/. Zimbra Community is definitely not open source with this release. We have a packaged Trial for Zimbra Community 8.0 which was announced and released today. It will run in a desktop or server windows environment or vm. No need for SQL or IIS for the trial.

  • Hi folks,

    it’s really sad that this product is only available for Windoze,
    an OS which isn’t just very expensive, but also a major security
    risk (yes, we have lots of customers who migrated from Exchange
    to ZCS in the process of getting rid of the dangerous M$ stuff).

    As long as it’s not running on free platforms (eg. GNU/Linux, BSD, Plan9, etc), maybe via Mono, we wouldn’t even give it a single thought.

    By the way: we’re currently in process of fixing the ZCS OSE build system (which is pretty unusable right now) and dropping all precompiled stuff, in order to build it completely from scratch and packaging for various distros (for now: Debian and Ubuntu, SLES and Centos will follow later). The main reason: we need to be able to review the code (eg. for security reaons) and do our customizations there.

    Zimbra hasn’t been pretty uncooperative here in recent years, even tries to force partners like us to migrate all our customers to NE, so we simply can’t proceed w/ ZCS w/o our own fork.

    Is there any way to integrate the Zimbra community with zimbra collaboration (Email) server.Will Zimbra community will communicate with zimbra ldap for user provisioning and authentication in zimbra community .Can I use Chat part of Zimbra community with zimbra collaboration ( email) ?

    I like the new Zimbra Community 8.0 a lot. Great improvements! What I don’t see yet are the Android and IOS Apps for this solution? Can you tell anything about these Apps?

      Thanks! You won’t see our native apps in the app store because what we’ve done is create the toolkits to allow each customer to customize the native apps for their communities then publish under their brands.

  • Any chance in the future that Zimbra Community will run on Linux servers ? We’re using ZCS 8 on Ubuntu right now and we would like to use the other product too but there’s one thing that will never happen for us is to run windows servers :)

    YES! In fact I now have a native iOS app on my phone for our internal community here at Zimbra. The mobile app toolkits are polished and going through a final round of QA in preparation for launch. One of the things we did to make it easier for customers to publish their own, branded native app was to build a tool that packages together all the bits and pieces need to submit an app to either the iOS App Store or Google Play. If you’re handy with mobile app dev then you don’t need to use it, but for most of our customers this seemed like a great idea.

  • No Linux version, so I’ll give it a miss. Perhaps it would be an idea, since there’s a few people commented on wanting a Linux version – that it can be provided on a Linux platform. You have Zimbra Collaboration on Linux, so perhaps you should do the same with Zimbra Community.

    Considering, that all your Zimbra Collaboration users are Linux users.
