Innovating in delivering innovation: Blending open source, SaaS, and Web 2.0

Posted in Open Source by Scott Dietzen on May 21st, 2007

In the Zimbra blog, we tend to focus on innovation within the Zimbra software, but the Zimbra team is also always striving to improve the process through which our technology is developed and delivered. We have arrived at our current model over three years of noodling and experimentation. Think of it as a best-of-breed blend of proven approaches from open source with innovations in Software as a Service (SaaS), software appliances, and Web 2.0. We summarize some of those key insights below …

Mashup best practices?

Posted in Open Source by Scott Dietzen on May 16th, 2007

Last week IBM hosted an exploratory summit on mashups, modeled (I think) on our early brainstorming sessions that lead to the formation of the OpenAjax Alliance. Zimbra was thrilled to get the opportunity to join in and share some of our lessons learned in Ajax “mashing” the past couple of years. (As usual in these circumstances, I believe that any thoughts voiced by others are out of bounds for blogging, but feel no such reservations about our own contributions and ideas.)

Zimbra + RHX = Innovative & Yet Simple Messaging!

Posted in Open Source, Zimbra Server by John Holder on May 10th, 2007

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any simpler for organizations than downloading a pre-packaged messaging and collaboration solution like Zimbra, Red Hat’s RHX program finds a way. Comcast + Zimbra = Future of Unified Messaging

Posted in Open Source by Satish Dharmaraj on May 6th, 2007

Word is out that Zimbra and Comcast have teamed up; we just wanted to confirm it’s true! We’re excited to be working with Comcast – the largest domestic broadband cable provider. We love and share their integrated communications vision. Taking Comcast Triple Play to the web is the right strategy and will give consumers an easy way to manage their communications needs from one portal.

It’s still early, so we can’t provide a lot of detail yet. What we can say: this will be the first elegant, unified communications app for consumers to hit the web (check out the screenshots below). It’s simple to use, built on our AJAX platform, and consolidates everything – email, IM, voice mail, smart address book, and even RSS feeds.

New status and user action feedback

Posted in Zimbra Web Client by Kevin Henrikson on May 4th, 2007

Current versions of Zimbra show informational messages, status, and feedback in a small status window in the lower left. Several of us and some users have mentioned it’s too subtle and never catches your eye. For 5.0 we’ll be moving the status to a quick overlay status message.
